“A few years ago, I published a cookbook with legendary chef Marie Halone who graduated from La Varenne cooking school in Paris and then famously opened an elaborate tea room in Billings, Montana.

I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and have many choices of top-echelon graphic designers. After reviewing her work, I chose Liz McCall in Billings, who was excellently suited to my publishing project. She understood the feeling I was trying to achieve with this book and did a remarkable job. Even though we had to work remotely, Liz met all of my expectations to create a charming book that turned out to be wildly popular.

Cookbooks are one of the most difficult kinds of books to publish. Although this one was not large format – a color cover and color pages in a 128-page soft-cover French flap book 9 x 9”– it still had all the challenges of a larger cookbook.

From a pile of newspaper and magazine clippings, snapshots, menus, and recipes, Liz created interesting borders, photo and illustration inserts, diverse and compelling typeface selections, and made perfect color choices for the covers. Her advice about printing details were invaluable. The engaging visual texture of this book is exactly what I was hoping for. I gave her free rein to work out every design detail of this book. I did not change one thing she had created. We sold thousands of these books, surprising for a regional cookbook, and had to do a second printing.”

During that time period, Cellular Plus grew from 17 locations serving Montana and Wyoming to additional locations including Colorado, Oregon and Washington. In 2015, Cellular Plus moved their marketing production in-house, so there was no longer a need for design services.
