The logo design process

What is involved in the logo design process? The short answer is – it depends on the scope of your project. Here is a step-by-step example of the full logo design process for a new business.

Meet with the logo designer to discuss:
- Why you need a logo design.
- What business objective the logo will serve.
- The budget and project timeline.

Review the logo designer’s proposal:
- Logo designers offer packages to match the scope of the project. Based on your needs, they can recommend a level of investment.

The discovery process:
- Complete the project intake form to provide more details about your company, your target audience and potential applications of the logo.
- Discuss your design preferences – type of logo, custom colors and fonts.
- Share your company’s mission, goals and values.
- Identify potential industry competitors.
- Based on the discovery information, the designer can provide a style board for review. This intermediate step helps identify the logo’s creative direction in terms of graphic style, color and fonts.

The design process begins:
- The designer will begin brainstorming and sketching to develop design directions.
- They will create initial logo concepts and fully develop the best options that are appropriate, distinctive and memorable.

The review process:
- The designer will present logo designs and applications to branding assets such as signs, business cards and t-shirts
- The designer will gather initial client feedback on the logo design.

Ensuring the right solution:
- The designer will make adjustments as needed on the selected logo design and provide it for final review and approval.
- The designer will develop a brand guide if included in the selected logo package. A brand guide provides color, fonts and logo usage guidelines for reference in a consistent rollout of the new logo.

Logo delivery:
- Final logo files are formatted for print and web applications and provided to the client in a logo kit.
- Other logo package assets are developed as requested – business cards, brochures, signs.
- The logo copyright is transferred to the client with full project payment.
- Clients are encouraged to trademark their valuable business asset.
